Ramadan is a period of prayer, reflection and fasting for many Muslims worldwide. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.

Ramadan Start in Yemen

Day: The beginning of Ramadan in Yemen, as in other Islamic countries, is determined by the sighting of the new moon. Given that the Islamic calendar is lunar, the start date varies each year. The exact day is confirmed by religious authorities.

History: Ramadan commemorates the month during which Muslims believe the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. This annual observance is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Traditions: Yemenis, like other Muslims worldwide, observe Ramadan through fasting from dawn until sunset. This fast includes abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations during daylight hours.

On the first day of Ramadan:

  • Suhoor: Before dawn, families wake up to have Suhoor, a pre-fasting meal.

  • Niyyah: The intention (niyyah) to fast for the day is set internally.

  • Fajr Prayer: Following Suhoor, Muslims perform the Fajr prayer, marking the beginning of the day's fast.

  • Daily Activities: As they go about their day, individuals engage in extra prayers (salah), recitation of the Quran and acts of charity.

  • Iftar: After sunset and upon hearing the Maghrib prayer call, people break their fast with Iftar. Traditionally this starts with dates and water or milk followed by a communal meal.

  • Tarawih Prayers: Special nightly prayers called Tarawih are held in mosques after Iftar.

Throughout Yemen, Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection and increased devotion. Families gather to share meals and communities come together for prayer and fellowship. Charitable activities are heightened during this period as well.
