Our Lady of Coromoto in Venezuela

History:

Our Lady of Coromoto is a title given to the Virgin Mary by the Catholic Church, in honor of a reported apparition in 1652 to the indigenous Coromoto people in what is now Guanare, Venezuela. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to the Chief of the Coromotos and his wife, asking them to be baptized. The chief initially fled but subsequently converted and was baptized along with his people.

Day:

The feast day of Our Lady of Coromoto is celebrated on September 11 each year. This day commemorates the Virgin Mary as the Patroness of Venezuela, a title officially declared by Pope Pius XII on October 7, 1944.

Traditions:

On this day, Venezuelan Catholics participate in Masses and processions to honor Our Lady of Coromoto. Many make pilgrimages to the National Shrine Basilica of Our Lady of Coromoto near Guanare. The faithful often carry images and statues of Our Lady during processions.

People also gather for traditional music, dance, and festivities that highlight Venezuelan culture. Families may attend special church services followed by communal gatherings where they share food and stories about their faith.

In addition to these celebrations, many devotees pray novenas leading up to the feast day and seek blessings for themselves and their loved ones through acts of devotion such as prayer vigils and charitable works inspired by Marian values.
