Ramadan is a period of prayer, reflection and fasting for many Muslims worldwide. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.

Ramadan Start in Uzbekistan

Ramadan, the holy month of fasting for Muslims, begins in Uzbekistan based on the lunar Islamic calendar, which means its start date varies each year. The beginning is marked by the sighting of the crescent moon after the new moon.

History and Traditions

The observance of Ramadan stems from the Islamic belief that it was during this month that God revealed the first verses of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad. Hence, Ramadan holds immense spiritual significance.

In Uzbekistan, a country with a predominantly Muslim population, Ramadan is observed with deep reverence. The traditions are influenced by centuries of history and local customs.

Practices on The First Day

  • Suhur: Before dawn, people wake up to have their pre-fast meal (suhur), which is consumed before the Fajr prayer.
  • Niyyah (Intention): Individuals make their niyyah or intention to fast for the day.
  • Fasting: From dawn until sunset, individuals abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, and marital relations.
  • Taraweeh Prayers: After breaking their fast at sunset with iftar (often starting with dates and water), Muslims attend additional nightly prayers called Taraweeh at mosques.
  • Charity: Acts of charity (zakat and sadaqah) are emphasized during Ramadan as a way to purify wealth and help those in need.

Uzbek people also engage in increased religious reflection, reading of the Quran, and community activities. Traditional foods play an important role during iftar gatherings among family and friends.
