History: Independence Day in Uruguay marks the country's emancipation from Brazilian rule. The process began with the so-called "Declaration of Independence" by the Uruguayan national hero, José Gervasio Artigas, in 1815. However, it wasn't until August 25, 1825, after a series of battles and political negotiations, that the Thirty-Three Orientals led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja declared formal independence. This was later recognized with the signing of the Treaty of Montevideo on October 4, 1828.
Traditions: The day is celebrated with patriotic fervor across Uruguay. Public buildings are adorned with the national flag and various commemorative events take place throughout the country.
