Carnival / Shrove Monday in Uruguay

Carnival in Uruguay is one of the most significant and vibrant cultural events, with traditions deeply rooted in both European and African influences. The celebration typically spans over 40 days, making it one of the longest carnivals in the world. Shrove Monday, known as Lunes de Carnaval, marks the beginning of festivities.

History and Traditions:

The history of Carnival in Uruguay dates back to the arrival of Spanish and Portuguese colonists who brought with them the pre-Lenten celebrations. With time, African slaves also contributed their cultural practices, such as Candombe music and dance, which have become integral to Uruguayan Carnival.

Traditional events during Carnival include:

  • Desfile Inaugural del Carnaval: The Opening Parade that officially starts the festivities.
  • Concurso Oficial de Agrupaciones Carnavalescas: A competition where various carnival groups perform including "murgas" (choral groups), "comparsas" (groups with Candombe drums), "humoristas", "revistas", and "parodistas".
  • Las Llamadas: A parade specifically dedicated to Candombe music where "comparsas" march through neighborhoods displaying their elaborate costumes and rhythmic drumming.

Celebrations on Shrove Monday:

On Shrove Monday itself, Uruguayans engage in various activities including:

  1. Street Parties: People gather for parties filled with music and dancing.
  2. Attending Performances: Many go to tablados (temporary stages) set up around cities to watch performances by carnival groups.
  3. Costume Wearing: Participants often dress up in colorful costumes to join parades or simply enjoy the festive atmosphere.
  4. Social Gatherings: Families and friends come together for barbecues (asados) or picnics to enjoy the day off work.

Carnival/Shrove Monday is a public holiday in Uruguay, providing an opportunity for everyone to take part in the celebrations that are a testament to the country’s multicultural heritage.
