Date: Annually on October 5th
History: World Teachers' Day, also known as International Teachers Day, was established in 1994 by UNESCO to commemorate the signing of the 1966 UNESCO/ILO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This recommendation sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, teaching, and learning conditions.
Traditions: While not as widely observed in the United States as it is in some other countries due to the U.S. having its own Teacher Appreciation Week during the first full week of May, World Teachers' Day is still recognized by educational institutions and organizations across the nation.
Activities on World Teachers' Day:
The day serves as an opportunity to consider issues related to teachers and teaching and to show appreciation for their vital contribution to education and development.
