World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) in the United States is observed annually on June 15th. It represents a day when communities around the nation and the world promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic, and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.
WEAAD was established by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations; it was officially recognized for the first time in 2006. The day has since been commended for its role in spotlighting a global social issue that affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world.
