World Day Against Trafficking in Persons in the United States
History:
World Day Against Trafficking in Persons was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013, with Resolution A/RES/68/192. The resolution declared July 30th as a day to raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights. Although it's an international observance, the United States, as a member state of the UN, participates actively in commemorating this day.
Traditions:
In the United States, World Day Against Trafficking in Persons involves various activities aimed at increasing awareness and reducing incidence of human trafficking:
Educational Events: Organizations and government agencies often host workshops, conferences, and seminars to educate the public about human trafficking.
Social Media Campaigns: Hashtags such as #EndHumanTrafficking or #HumanTraffickingAwareness are used to engage people online.
Fundraisers: Many NGOs organize fundraising events to support victims and fund anti-trafficking operations.
Vigils or Walks: To honor victims and survivors of trafficking, communities may hold candlelight vigils or awareness walks.
What People Do:
Individuals can participate by attending local events or sharing information on social media.
Professionals might engage in specialized training sessions to better identify and respond to human trafficking.
Government officials often use this day to announce new initiatives or progress reports on combating trafficking.
Survivors sometimes share their stories to provide insight into the realities of human trafficking.
