World Creativity and Innovation Day in the United States
World Creativity and Innovation Day (WCID), celebrated on April 21st, is a United Nations-sanctioned day aimed at encouraging people to use creativity in problem-solving for all issues related to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
History:
Origins: The day was founded by Marci Segal in Canada in 2001 as World Creativity and Innovation Week. It was born out of a response to an article in Canada's National Post that described a study showing Canada as an innovation laggard.
UN Recognition: In 2017, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution recognizing the importance of creativity and innovation in problem-solving and the advancement of the economic, social, and cultural development of countries. They designated April 21st as World Creativity and Innovation Day.
Traditions:
Activities: People engage in various activities that foster innovation such as brainstorming sessions, workshops, conferences, educational events, and competitions.
Collaboration: Organizations and communities often collaborate to discuss creative solutions for local and global challenges.
What People Do:
Promotion of Creativity: Individuals are encouraged to think creatively, go beyond their traditional thinking patterns, and be open to new ideas.
Sharing Ideas: People share innovative ideas on social media platforms using hashtags like #WCID or #WorldCreativityAndInnovationDay.
Events: Corporations, educational institutions, and other organizations may host events or campaigns that highlight innovative projects or initiatives.
In summary, World Creativity and Innovation Day serves as a reminder for everyone across the United States—and globally—to harness creativity for positive change. It's a day where individual talents are celebrated with the collective goal of making our world more sustainable through innovation.
