The United Nations' (UN) World AIDS Day is annually observed on December 1.

World AIDS Day in the United States

Date: December 1st annually

History: World AIDS Day was first observed on December 1, 1988, after being conceived by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter in August 1987. Bunn and Netter were public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. The United States, along with other countries, has since observed World AIDS Day each year.

Traditions and Observations:

  • Awareness Raising: Various events are held to raise awareness about the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of the HIV infection. Governments, health officials, NGOs, and individuals around the country participate.

  • Memorials: People often pay tribute to those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses.

  • Education: Educational campaigns are prominent on this day to help people understand HIV/AIDS better and combat stigma.

  • Wearing Red Ribbons: The red ribbon is the universal symbol of awareness and support for those living with HIV. Many wear this ribbon on World AIDS Day.

  • Testing and Prevention Campaigns: Free or incentivized HIV testing is often available. Campaigns promote safe sex practices to prevent the spread of HIV.

  • Fundraising Events: Charities and organizations may hold fundraisers to support HIV/AIDS research, treatment programs, and support services.

What People Do: People participate in various activities from attending health fairs, watching documentaries about HIV/AIDS history and impact, engaging in community outreach programs to lighting candles in remembrance of those affected by AIDS. Activities are aimed at solidarity for people living with HIV/AIDS and pushing towards an eventual end to the disease through education, prevention strategies, and ongoing research.
