History: Veterans' Day, originally known as Armistice Day, commemorates the end of World War I when hostilities ceased on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. It was first celebrated in 1919, and President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day to honor veterans of World War I. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by replacing "Armistice" with "Veterans," and it became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

What People Do:
The day is both a state and federal holiday, so non-essential government offices are closed, as are schools and some businesses. It's a time for reflection on patriotism, sacrifice, and service.
