Veterans Day in the United States
Date: November 11th annually
Purpose: Honors military veterans, that is, persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
History:
Origins: Originally called Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I when hostilities formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
Transition to Veterans Day: In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the earlier legislation by striking out "Armistice" and inserting "Veterans." November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
Traditions:
Moment of Silence: Many observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m. in respect for those who served and sacrificed.
Ceremonies and Parades: Official ceremonies are held across the country, including laying wreaths at memorials and holding parades that celebrate and thank veterans.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: A significant ceremony occurs at Arlington National Cemetery by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
What People Do:
Community Events: Attend community parades, ceremonies, and events dedicated to honoring local veterans.
Educational Programs: Schools often host programs to educate students about the service and sacrifice of American veterans.
Volunteering: Many people use this day as an opportunity to volunteer or support veteran-related causes or charities.
Displaying Flags: It is common for private homes and businesses to fly American flags as a mark of respect.
Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day; Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who have died while in military service.
