Memorial Day commemorates all Americans who have died in military service for the United States.

Memorial Day in the United States

Date: Observed annually on the last Monday of May.

History: Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, began after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the conflict. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Over time, it evolved to honor all American service members who died in all wars.

Traditions:

  • Flag Display: The U.S. flag is flown at half-staff from dawn until noon and then raised to full-staff until sunset.
  • Ceremonies: Many cities host Memorial Day parades featuring military personnel and members of veterans' organizations.
  • National Moment of Remembrance: At 3 p.m. local time, Americans are encouraged to pause for a moment of silence to remember those who have died in military service.
  • Visiting Cemeteries: People visit cemeteries and memorials to honor fallen soldiers, often decorating graves with flowers and flags.
  • Wearing Poppies: Inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields," red poppies are worn or displayed as a symbol of remembrance.

Activities: On Memorial Day, families often hold picnics, barbecues, and family gatherings. It's also seen as the unofficial start of summer, with many people taking trips or going to beaches or parks.
