Kentucky Derby is a Grade I Stakes horse race held annually in Louisville, Kentucky in May.

Kentucky Derby in the United States

History

The Kentucky Derby, often referred to as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports," is a historic American thoroughbred horse race held annually in Louisville, Kentucky. The event was founded by Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., who was inspired by the Epsom Derby in England and the Grand Prix de Paris in France. The first race took place on May 17, 1875, and it has been held at Churchill Downs racetrack ever since.

Race Day

The Kentucky Derby is traditionally held on the first Saturday in May, capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. It is the first leg of the American Triple Crown, followed by the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes.

Traditions

  • Mint Julep: A traditional beverage made of bourbon, mint, sugar, and water.
  • Ladies' Hats: Women attending the derby sport wide-brimmed, elaborate hats as a fashion statement.
  • "My Old Kentucky Home": Sung by the crowd as horses parade before the start of the race.
  • Roses: The winner is draped with a garland of roses, earning the race its nickname "Run for the Roses."

Activities

On Derby Day, spectators typically dress up in fine attire to watch some of America's top thoroughbreds compete. Parties are abundant around Churchill Downs and across various venues. Betting on horses is a popular activity among attendees and viewers nationwide.
