International Women’s Day celebrates women’s achievements worldwide and throughout history.

International Women's Day in the United States

History: International Women's Day (IWD) has its origins in the early 20th century, emerging from labor movements in North America and Europe. It was first celebrated on February 28, 1909, in the United States after a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. In 1910, an International Socialist Women's Conference suggested a Women's Day to be held annually. March 8 became the established date when women gained suffrage in Soviet Russia in 1917 and it was declared a national holiday there. The day was predominantly celebrated by socialist and communist countries until it was adopted by the global feminist movement in the late 1960s. The United Nations began celebrating International Women's Day during the International Women’s Year in 1975.

Traditions: International Women's Day is not an official public holiday in the United States; however, it is observed across the country with various events and activities aimed at highlighting issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, violence and abuse against women, and women's economic empowerment.

What People Do:

  • Educational Events: Seminars, conferences, and discussions are organized to educate people about women’s rights issues.

  • Protests and Rallies: Advocates for gender equality may arrange demonstrations to raise awareness about gender-based inequality and lobby for change.

  • Awards Ceremonies: Achievements by women are often recognized through awards ceremonies or acknowledgments on this day.

  • Networking Events: Professional gatherings or networking events specifically for women are common to foster career opportunities and mentorship.

  • Fundraisers: Charities that support women's causes may hold fundraising events to generate financial support for their work.

  • Arts and Culture: Art exhibits, poetry readings, film screenings that focus on women's lives and experiences are showcased.

  • Social Media Campaigns: Hashtags such as #InternationalWomensDay or #IWD2023 get trending online as activists share messages of empowerment or highlight issues facing women around the world.

On IWD, individuals may also choose personal ways to mark the day such as supporting female-owned businesses or reaching out to important women in their lives with messages of appreciation.
