The International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. The resolution A/RES/69/293 proclaimed June 19th as an annual day to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence and honor the victims and survivors. While it is observed globally, including in the United States, its commemoration varies by country.
In the United States, there are no traditional celebrations associated with this day owing to its solemn nature. Instead, activities tend to focus on advocacy and raising awareness:
Educational Events: Organizations may host seminars or panel discussions to educate people about the impact of sexual violence in conflicts.
Vigils: Some communities hold candlelight vigils to remember victims and show solidarity with survivors.
Social Media Campaigns: Hashtags and online campaigns help spread awareness about the importance of addressing sexual violence in conflict.
Advocacy: NGOs and human rights activists often use this day to call for policy changes or increased support for measures that prevent sexual violence during conflicts.
Support Services: There may be efforts to highlight or fundraise for services that support survivors of such violence.
On this day, individuals, government officials, activists, and organizations strive to shine a light on issues surrounding sexual violence in conflict zones and reaffirm their commitment to ending these atrocities.
