International Day for People of African Descent
Origin: The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the International Day for People of African Descent on December 16, 2020, via resolution A/RES/75/170. This day is observed annually on August 31.
Purpose: It was established to promote the extraordinary contributions of the African diaspora around the world and to eliminate all forms of discrimination against people of African descent.
History in the United States: While the day is recognized by the United Nations, it does not have an official federal recognition in the United States. However, given the significant African American population and ongoing efforts to address racial inequality and celebrate African heritage, its themes resonate within U.S. society.
Traditions: As a new observance, specific traditions are still evolving. Activities may include educational events, discussions on historical and contemporary issues affecting people of African descent, cultural festivals showcasing African diasporic music, dance, art, and food.
