German American Day in the United States

Date: October 6th

History: German American Day celebrates the contributions of German immigrants to the culture and society of the United States. The date marks the anniversary of the arrival of 13 German families from Krefeld to Philadelphia in 1683, which led to the founding of Germantown, one of America's oldest settlements.

Originally celebrated in the nineteenth century, German American Day faded away during World War I due to anti-German sentiment. However, it was revived in 1983 when President Ronald Reagan proclaimed October 6 as German American Day to honor the 300th anniversary of German-American immigration and culture.

In 1987, Congress approved a resolution designating October 6 as an annual observance, and it was made official with Public Law 100-104.

Traditions: On this day, events that showcase German-American heritage are held. These may include:

  • Parades and festivals featuring traditional music and dance.
  • Educational programs about German-American history.
  • Special events at schools and cultural institutions.

Activities: People often engage in various activities such as:

  • Food celebrations with traditional German dishes like pretzels, sausages (bratwurst), and beer.
  • Social gatherings at local German-American clubs or societies.
  • Ceremonies that honor prominent figures of German descent or those who have contributed significantly to German-American relations.

The emphasis is on celebrating the achievements and contributions of Germans in America rather than any particular rituals or customs.
