First Day of National Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States

Date

The first day of National Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated on September 15th each year in the United States.

History

The observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988.

Significance of the Date

The date of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

Traditions and Activities

  • Cultural Events: Parades, festivals, and fairs that showcase Hispanic culture are common.
  • Educational Activities: Schools and universities often have programs to educate students about the history and contributions of Hispanic Americans.
  • Art Exhibitions: Museums may feature art by Hispanic artists or about Hispanic heritage.
  • Music and Dance: Traditional music and dance performances are widespread during this month.
  • Food: Enjoying traditional Hispanic cuisine is a popular way to celebrate.
  • Community Outreach: Organizations may hold events focused on community service or awareness related to issues affecting the Hispanic population.

People engage with the spirit of the month through participation in these activities that honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
