Father's Day in the United States
Date: Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June each year.
History:
Origins: The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from various sources. One of the first known proposals was by Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington, inspired by Mother's Day.
Establishment: Dodd wanted a celebration that honored fathers like her own father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent. After gaining support from local churches and community leaders, the first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910, in Spokane.
Official Recognition: It wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the law that made it a permanent national holiday.
Traditions:
Gifts: Children often give gifts to their fathers which could range from homemade crafts and cards to more elaborate presents such as electronics or clothing.
Activities: Many families celebrate by spending time together. This could include outdoor activities like picnics or sports, dining out at restaurants, or simply gathering for a meal at home.
Acknowledgment: Aside from immediate family celebrations, there is also an emphasis on appreciating all paternal figures including stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other men who play a fatherly role.
What People Do:
Individuals may use this day to express appreciation for their fathers with greetings and thanks.
