Father Damien Day or Saint Damien Day is an occasion for residents of the state of Hawaii to remember the life and deeds of a Belgian missionary.

Father Damien Day in the United States

Date: April 15

Location: Primarily observed in Hawaii

History: Father Damien Day is dedicated to Saint Damien de Veuster, also known as Father Damien. He was a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium who dedicated his life to caring for the individuals suffering from Hansen's disease (leprosy) who were quarantined on the Kalaupapa Peninsula on the island of Molokai, Hawaii. After serving these isolated individuals for many years, Father Damien eventually contracted leprosy himself and passed away in 1889. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 11, 2009.

Traditions and Observances:

  • Commemoration Services: Religious services or masses may be held to honor Saint Damien's life and work.
  • Community Service: People are encouraged to engage in acts of charity and community service, reflecting Father Damien's dedication to humanitarian causes.
  • Education: Schools may use this day to teach students about Father Damien's contributions, leprosy awareness, and the history of Hansen's disease treatment.
  • Visits to Kalaupapa Peninsula: Some may choose to visit or hold events at Kalaupapa National Historical Park in Molokai where Father Damien served.

The observance of this day is primarily a local affair with no federal recognition, which means that it is not widely celebrated across the entire United States but holds significant importance in Hawaii.
