Doctors' Day in the United States
Date: March 30th is annually recognized as Doctors' Day in the United States.
History:
Origin: The first observance of Doctors' Day was on March 30, 1933, in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set a day to honor physicians.
Significance of Date: The date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the first use of general anesthesia in surgery by Dr. Crawford W. Long on March 30, 1842.
National Recognition: In 1958, the United States House of Representatives adopted a resolution commemorating Doctors’ Day. Later on February 21, 1991, President George H.W. Bush officially designated March 30th as National Doctors' Day with Public Law 101-473.
Traditions:
Appreciation: Patients and hospital staff often show appreciation for doctors by sending cards, flowers (traditionally red carnations), and gifts.
Recognition Events: Many healthcare organizations hold luncheons or special recognition ceremonies to honor their medical professionals.
Community Events: Some communities may organize health fairs or free screenings that highlight the importance of physicians and promote health awareness.
What People Do:
On Doctors' Day in the United States, individuals and institutions take the time to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions and services provided by physicians. They may:
Send thank-you notes or cards to their personal physicians.
Share stories on social media about positive experiences with doctors.
Hospitals and clinics might host breakfasts, lunches or award ceremonies to recognize outstanding medical providers within their facilities.
This day serves as an opportunity for patients, colleagues, friends, and family members to express gratitude towards doctors for their dedication and care within their communities.
