Assumption Day is a Christian observance in the United States that is held annually on August 15. Catholics observe the Dormition (falling asleep) or the day that the Blessed Virgin Mary was received into heaven.

Assumption of Mary in the United States

Day:

  • The Assumption of Mary is celebrated on August 15th each year.

History:

  • The Assumption of Mary into Heaven is a belief in Catholicism that the Virgin Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven.
  • This belief was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, in the apostolic constitution "Munificentissimus Deus".

Traditions:

  • While the Assumption of Mary is not a Holy Day of Obligation in all dioceses of the United States, it is a significant feast day for Catholics.
  • In places where it is observed as a Holy Day of Obligation, Catholics attend Mass. Special services and processions may also be held.
  • Some parishes may have a blessing of herbs and flowers in remembrance of the tradition that flowers were found in Mary's tomb instead of her body.

Activities:

  • People who observe this day might participate in special prayers and devotions to honor Mary, such as praying the Rosary or attending a vigil service on the eve of the Assumption.
  • In communities with strong Catholic traditions or large populations of Catholic faithful, public processions or other communal festivities might take place.
