History: Martyr's Day in Uganda commemorates the execution of a group of Christians between 1885 and 1887 by order of Kabaka Mwanga II, the then king of Buganda, which is now part of modern-day Uganda. The martyrs were killed for their faith as they posed a threat to the king's authority and traditional African beliefs.
The best-known martyrs are Charles Lwanga and his companions, a group of 22 Catholic converts who were burnt to death on June 3, 1886, after refusing to renounce Christianity. Anglican converts suffered a similar fate. Pope Paul VI canonized the Catholic martyrs on October 18, 1964.
