Karume Day is observed annually on April 7th in Tanzania to commemorate the assassination of Abeid Amani Karume, the first President of Zanzibar. He was a significant figure in Tanzanian history, having played a pivotal role in leading the Zanzibar Revolution which overthrew the Sultanate on January 12, 1964.
Karume became President of Zanzibar after the revolution and later served as Vice President when Tanganyika and Zanzibar united to form Tanzania. His death in 1972 was a result of an assassination carried out by opponents to his regime.
