Republic Day/New Year's Day in Taiwan

Date Observed: January 1st

History and Significance:

Republic Day or New Year's Day in Taiwan, known locally as "Yuan Dan," is a public holiday that celebrates the beginning of the Gregorian New Year. The day also has historical significance as it marks the establishment of the Republic of China (ROC) on January 1, 1912, after the Qing dynasty was overthrown during the Xinhai Revolution.

Traditions:

  • Fireworks and Festivities: To mark the occasion, fireworks displays are common in many parts of Taiwan, especially in major cities like Taipei. The Taipei 101 skyscraper often features a prominent fireworks display.

  • Flag Raising Ceremony: A traditional flag-raising ceremony takes place at the Presidential Office Building in Taipei. This event sometimes includes performances by military bands and honor guards.

  • Family Gatherings: Many Taiwanese use this holiday to spend time with family members. It is common for families to gather for a special meal.

  • Red Envelopes: Similar to Chinese New Year traditions, some families may give red envelopes containing money to children as a symbol of good luck and prosperity for the coming year.

Activities:

On Republic Day/New Year's Day, people in Taiwan often engage in leisure activities such as visiting temples to pray for good fortune, going to parks or attending concerts and cultural events organized by various municipalities. It is also a popular day for shopping as many businesses offer special sales and promotions.

Note: While Republic Day marks the founding of the ROC, it should not be confused with Double Ten Day (October 10th), which specifically commemorates the start of the Wuchang Uprising leading to the formation of the ROC.
