History: Peace Memorial Day, also known as the 228 Peace Day, commemorates the February 28 Incident that occurred in 1947. The incident began as an anti-government uprising and was violently suppressed by the Kuomintang-led Republic of China government, which resulted in thousands of deaths. The event marked the beginning of the White Terror period during which political dissent was brutally crushed.
