Lunar New Year's Eve in Taiwan

Day and History: Lunar New Year's Eve, also known as Chuxi, marks the final day of the lunar calendar year in Taiwan. The history of the celebration is steeped in Chinese tradition, with roots extending back millennia. The festival is influenced by ancient customs and agricultural practices, with a focus on family unity and honoring ancestors.

Traditions:

  • Family Reunion Dinner: Families gather for a reunion dinner known as "Nian Ye Fan" which features an abundance of dishes symbolizing prosperity and good fortune.
  • Ancestor Worship: Many Taiwanese pay homage to their ancestors by preparing ritual offerings and visiting family temples.
  • House Cleaning: Homes are thoroughly cleaned to sweep away any bad luck from the old year and make room for incoming good luck.
  • Red Envelopes: Elders give red envelopes containing money ("hongbao") to children as a blessing and to transfer fortune.

Activities:

  • Watching CCTV New Year’s Gala: Despite being a Chinese program, many families tune in to watch this variety show that celebrates the festive occasion.
  • Setting Off Firecrackers: At midnight, firecrackers are set off to scare away evil spirits and welcome the new year with loud noises.
  • Staying Up Late (Shousui): People stay awake after dinner to increase the longevity of their elder family members—a practice known as "shousui."

This night paves the way for the Lunar New Year Day, which is filled with visits to temples, more feasting, and socializing with friends and relatives. It’s a blend of solemn traditions and joyous celebrations marking one of Taiwan’s most significant festivals.
