Chinese Valentine's Day in Taiwan (七夕节 - Qixi Festival)

History and Traditions:

Chinese Valentine's Day, known as the Qixi Festival or Double Seventh Festival, has its roots in a romantic legend. It is said to be the day when the cowherd (Niulang) and weaver girl (Zhinü), two lovers separated by the Milky Way, are allowed to meet just once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.

The festival has ancient origins and can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). Traditionally, young women would engage in needlework competitions and make offerings to Zhinü, praying for skills in needlecraft as well as for finding a good husband.

Modern Celebrations:

In Taiwan, Chinese Valentine's Day has adopted various modern aspects while maintaining some traditional rituals. Here's what people typically do:

  • Gift Exchange: Couples exchange gifts such as flowers, chocolates, or other tokens of love.
  • Romantic Outings: Many couples go out for romantic dinners or take walks in parks.
  • Prayers and Offerings: Some people still observe the tradition of making offerings to Zhinü for blessings in love and marriage.
  • Festive Events: Special events may be held, such as matchmaking activities or love-themed markets.
  • Decorations: Streets and malls are often adorned with decorations symbolizing love and romance.

While not a public holiday in Taiwan, Chinese Valentine's Day retains its significance as a celebration of love, blending ancient traditions with contemporary customs.
