Gospel Day in Tuvalu
Gospel Day is a significant religious holiday in Tuvalu, celebrated annually to commemorate the arrival of Christianity to the islands. It is marked on the island of Niutao on May 10, and other islands have their own set dates.
The history of Gospel Day traces back to the work of early missionaries in the 19th century. The London Missionary Society played a pivotal role in spreading Christianity across the Pacific Islands. In Tuvalu, the gospel was first introduced around 1861 when Elekana, a deacon from Manihiki in the Cook Islands, was blown off course and ended up in Niutao.
