Restoration of Independence Day in East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, occurs annually on May 20th. This date commemorates the country's return to independence after a long period of foreign domination. Initially colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century, East Timor declared its independence on November 28, 1975. However, just nine days later, Indonesia invaded and occupied the territory until 1999. Following a UN-sponsored referendum in August 1999, where an overwhelming majority voted for independence from Indonesia, East Timor faced a violent backlash that led to international intervention.
On May 20, 2002, after years of transitional administration led by the United Nations, East Timor officially became the first new sovereign state of the 21st century. The day marks the end of colonization and acknowledges the resilience and struggles faced by its people during occupation.
Restoration of Independence Day is marked with various celebrations across the country:
People engage in remembrance as well as festivities that underscore both their cultural heritage and their continued aspirations for peace and progress as an independent nation.
