Date: August 30
History: Popular Consultation Day, also known as Referendum Day, marks a significant moment in the history of East Timor (Timor-Leste). On August 30, 1999, a UN-sponsored referendum took place where the East Timorese people voted for independence from Indonesia. This was a pivotal event following years of conflict and occupation that began when Indonesia invaded the former Portuguese colony in 1975. The vote resulted in an overwhelming majority (around 78.5%) opting for independence.
However, the aftermath was marred by violence as pro-Indonesian militias, with support from elements within the Indonesian military, initiated a campaign of terror and destruction. This led to international intervention and the establishment of the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) which administered the territory until formal independence was declared on May 20, 2002.
