The civil war in Tajikistan was primarily a clash between regional factions from Garm and Gorno-Badakhshan, which supported the government, and opposition factions from Kulyab and Khujand, which included a range of Islamist and secular forces. After several years of intense fighting that resulted in considerable loss of life and displacement, peace talks led to the signing of the General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Moscow on June 27, 1997.
