Cross Day, known as Día de la Cruz in Spanish, is celebrated on May 3rd in El Salvador, as well as in various other Latin American countries. This day marks a fusion of pre-Columbian and Christian traditions.
The tradition dates back to colonial times and is rooted in the Christian celebration of the finding of the true cross by Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine. However, it also incorporates indigenous customs related to the worship of nature and the beginning of the rainy season, which is critical for agriculture.
On Cross Day, it's customary for Salvadorans to decorate crosses with colorful paper or fabric and adorn them with fruits, flowers, and palm fronds. These crosses are then placed outside homes and in public places.
