Republic Day in South Sudan is celebrated on July 9th. This day marks the country's independence from Sudan, which was officially declared on July 9, 2011. The day holds significant historical importance as it commemorates the end of Africa's longest-running civil war and symbolizes the birth of the world's newest nation at that time.
The history leading up to Republic Day is steeped in decades of conflict between the northern and southern regions of Sudan. The First Sudanese Civil War (1955-1972) and the Second Sudanese Civil War (1983-2005) were primarily driven by cultural, religious, and ethnic divisions, along with economic disparities. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in 2005 laid the groundwork for a referendum on independence for South Sudan which was held in January 2011. Overwhelmingly, South Sudanese voted for secession from the north, with about 99% in favor.
