Martyrs Day in South Sudan
Martyrs Day in South Sudan is observed annually on July 30th. This day is set aside to commemorate the sacrifices of those who lost their lives during the long struggle for independence from Sudan, which lasted for more than two decades. The conflict led to the loss of an estimated two million lives and culminated in the independence of South Sudan on July 9, 2011.
History
The history of Martyrs Day is deeply entwined with the civil war between the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and the government of Sudan. The day specifically honors SPLA leader Dr. John Garang de Mabior who died in a helicopter crash on July 30, 2005, shortly after signing a comprehensive peace agreement that ended Africa's longest-running civil war.
