Freedom Day in Suriname (Keti Koti)

Freedom Day, known as Keti Koti (meaning "broken chains" in Sranan Tongo), commemorates the abolition of slavery in Suriname on July 1, 1863. However, enslaved people were required to work on plantations for a mandatory 10-year transition period until 1873 when they were granted full freedom.
