Labor Day, known as 'Prvomáj' in Slovakia, is celebrated annually on May 1st. The day is a national public holiday, marking the achievements of the labor movement and commemorating workers' rights. It is also associated with the arrival of spring.
Its origins trace back to the late 19th century where it began as an international protest day for workers demanding fair wages and reasonable working hours. In Slovakia, Labor Day was officially recognized after World War II during the era of socialism.
Traditionally, people enjoy the day off work and school by spending time outdoors. Many participate in outdoor activities like hiking or having a picnic with family. Parades and demonstrations were common during the socialist era but have become less frequent in recent years.
The day is also linked to love and romance, due to merging with another tradition - Maypole erecting. This old Slavic custom involves young men placing maypoles under their beloved's window as a sign of their affection.
In recent years, Labor Day in Slovakia has been used by unions and worker groups to highlight contemporary labor issues and push for improved labor conditions.
