Epiphany, known as "Zjavenie Pána" or "Tri krále" (Three Kings) in Slovakia, is celebrated on January 6th. This Christian feast day commemorates the revelation of God incarnate as Jesus Christ and is often associated with the visit of the Magi (Three Wise Men) to the baby Jesus.
Religious Significance: The day marks the baptism of Jesus in the Western Christian Church and the arrival of the Magi in Eastern traditions.
Chalking The Door: A common tradition involves priests or parishioners marking the doors of homes with chalk, which is often blessed during Epiphany services. The markings typically include the year and initials of the Three Kings (C+M+B or K+M+B), standing for Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, but also interpreted as an abbreviation for "Christus mansionem benedicat" which means "May Christ bless this house".
House Blessings: Homes are blessed to bring good fortune for the coming year. It's a time when families gather to pray and reflect.
Processions: In some regions, children dressed as kings go from door to door, singing carols and sometimes performing short plays.
Church Services: Many attend special church services on Epiphany Day. It's a holy day of obligation for Catholics, meaning they are required to attend Mass.
Charity: It's also a time for acts of charity. People donate to various causes or give money to carolers who collect funds for charitable organizations.
Public Holiday: Although not a public holiday across all of Slovakia, it remains an important religious day for many Slovak families.
Epiphany remains an integral part of Slovak religious tradition, reflecting both its historical roots and contemporary cultural significance.
