Labor Day or May Day, celebrated on the 1st of May, is a national holiday in Slovenia, as it is in many other countries around the world. The day is dedicated to honoring the achievements of workers and the labor movement.
The origins of Labor Day date back to the late 19th century when labor movements across the world began advocating for better working conditions, including an eight-hour workday. In Slovenia, which was then part of Austro-Hungarian Empire, workers also started organizing demonstrations and strikes to fight for their rights.
One of the most enduring traditions associated with Labor Day in Slovenia is the setting up and lighting of bonfires (kresovanje) on the eve of May 1st. These bonfires symbolize solidarity among workers and are a signal of spring and renewal. Many towns and communities gather around these large fires for celebrations that include music, dancing, and socializing.
On May 1st itself, it’s common for families and friends to go for a hike or spend time in nature as spring is in full bloom. Public events such as concerts, picnics, or political gatherings also take place. Many people also use this day to rest and relax from work.
Labor unions might organize marches or rallies to bring attention to current labor issues or to celebrate past victories within the worker's rights movements.
