Hari Raya Haji, also known as Eid al-Adha or the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the two major Islamic festivals celebrated by Muslims around the world. In Singapore, a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society, Hari Raya Haji is a public holiday observed with respect and solemnity by the Muslim community.
The festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Isma'il (Ishmael) as an act of obedience to God's command. However, before he could carry out the act, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead. This act of faith is honored by Muslims who perform Qurbani, which means sacrifice. Every year during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah, pilgrims travel to Mecca for Hajj - one of Islam's Five Pillars - culminating in Eid al-Adha.
