National Day in Sweden

National Day in Sweden, known as 'Sveriges nationaldag', is celebrated annually on June 6th. It is a day that commemorates two historical events: Gustav Vasa being elected king in 1523, which marked the foundation of modern Sweden, and the adoption of a new constitution in 1809.

History

Prior to 1983, June 6th was celebrated as the Swedish Flag Day. At that time, it wasn't a public holiday. In 1983, the day was named the Swedish National Day by the Riksdag (the national legislature), and it only became a public holiday in 2005.

Traditions

  • Flag Raising: Swedes proudly hoist the Swedish flag and many wear yellow and blue, reflecting the colors of their flag.
  • Citizenship Ceremonies: It's a tradition for municipalities to arrange citizenship ceremonies for new Swedish citizens to officially welcome them.
  • Open Palace: The Royal Palace in Stockholm is open to the public free of charge, offering people an opportunity to explore Swedish cultural heritage.
  • Official Ceremonies: There are official celebrations including speeches by politicians and other figures at significant historical sites such as Skansen, an open-air museum in Stockholm.
  • Concerts & Performances: Various music concerts and performances reflect upon Swedish culture and history.

What People Do

Swedes engage in numerous activities on National Day:

  • Many take part or watch traditional parades and community festivities.
  • Families often spend time together enjoying picnics or barbecues if weather permits.
  • Cultural institutions such as museums often offer free entry or special exhibitions relating to Swedish heritage.
  • It's common for people to visit local landmarks and enjoy nature.

National Day serves as an occasion for Swedes to reflect on their national identity and history while enjoying leisure activities with family and friends.
