Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas Day and falls on December 24 in the Gregorian calendar.

Christmas Eve in Sweden (Julafton)

History and Tradition: Christmas Eve in Sweden is the main day of celebration for Christmas, a tradition that has evolved with influences from both pagan midwinter celebrations and Christian customs. The practice of celebrating on the 24th rather than the 25th is common in many Scandinavian and European countries.

Celebrations: On this day, activities are often centered around family and warmth during the dark winter season. It is a festive time filled with age-old customs.

  • Julbord: A significant part of the festivities is the "Julbord" - a traditional Swedish Christmas buffet, consisting of various dishes including pickled herring, smoked salmon, meatballs, ham (julskinka), sausages, beetroot salad, cheeses, and more.
  • Kalle Anka: At 3 PM many Swedes watch "Kalle Anka och hans vänner önskar God Jul" (Donald Duck and His Friends Wish You a Merry Christmas), a Disney television special that has become an essential part of Swedish Christmas since it first aired in 1959.
  • Gift Exchange: After "Kalle Anka," families traditionally exchange presents. This is either done by a family member dressed as Tomten (Santa Claus) or by picking gifts from under the Christmas tree.
  • Church Services: Some Swedes attend church services on Christmas Eve. The most famous is probably "Julotta," which is an early morning service on Christmas Day.

Decorations: Homes are decorated with stars, lights, advent candles, and sometimes straw ornaments. A common feature is also the adventsljusstake (advent candelabra), which brings light into the dark winter days leading up to Christmas.

Lucia Celebration: Earlier in December, on the 13th, there's Saint Lucia's Day which marks the beginning of the Christmas season in Sweden with Lucia processions featuring singers clad in white gowns carrying candles. Though not on Christmas Eve itself, it contributes to the overall festive spirit leading up to Julafton.

Note:

Swedish traditions may vary slightly from region to region and have evolved over time. However, family gathering and warmth remain central to Swedish celebrations on Christmas Eve.
