Constitution Day in Seychelles
Constitution Day in Seychelles is celebrated annually on June 18. It commemorates the day in 1993 when the country adopted its new constitution after a period of single-party rule, marking the establishment of a multiparty system and the consolidation of democratic governance.
In the wake of independence from Britain in 1976, Seychelles experienced political upheaval that led to a coup and the establishment of a one-party socialist state. After years of authoritarian rule, internal and external pressures prompted political reforms. This culminated in a constitutional commission drafting a new constitution, which was then approved by a national referendum on June 18, 1993.
