The National Day of Thanksgiving in the Solomon Islands was established to commemorate the restoration of peace to the nation after years of ethnic tension and conflict, particularly between 1998 and 2003. The tensions primarily involved the Isatabu Freedom Movement (IFM) and the Malaita Eagle Force (MEF) which led to a period known as "The Tensions." A peace agreement was eventually brokered with international assistance, notably from Australia and New Zealand through the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI).
On this day, citizens reflect on the struggles their country has overcome and express gratitude for peace and unity. It is also a time to appreciate cultural diversity and promote reconciliation among different communities within the nation.
The National Day of Thanksgiving is an opportunity for Solomon Islanders to pause from their daily routines, acknowledge past hardships, celebrate their shared identity, and foster a culture of peace.
