Arafat Day in Saudi Arabia

Arafat Day, known as Yawm Arafah, is an Islamic holiday that falls on the 9th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar. It is considered the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage and the day before Eid al-Adha. On this day, pilgrims gather at the plain of Arafat near Mecca to perform the most critical ritual in Hajj, standing in vigil (Wuquf).

History and Significance: The significance of Arafat Day stems from Islamic tradition where it is believed that Prophet Muhammad delivered his Farewell Sermon to Muslims who had accompanied him for the Hajj towards the end of his life. It is also said that on this day, Allah perfected Islam for humanity.

Traditions: For those performing Hajj:

  • Pilgrims travel to Mount Arafat and stand in contemplation from noon until sunset.
  • They engage in prayer and supplication, seeking forgiveness and making personal supplications.

For non-pilgrims:

  • Muslims who are not performing Hajj observe fasting on Arafat Day as an act of worship and devotion.
  • Fasting on Arafat Day is believed to expiate the sins of two years: the previous year and the coming year.
  • Muslims around Saudi Arabia engage in increased prayer and recitation of the Quran.

Activities on Arafat Day:

  • The main activity for pilgrims is being present at Arafat and engaging in Dua (supplications).
  • Non-pilgrims may fast from dawn until dusk.
  • Listening to sermons or religious lectures about the significance of Arafat Day is common.
  • Many families prepare for Eid al-Adha celebrations which follow after Arafat Day.

In essence, Arafat Day is a cornerstone event within Islamic practice signifying devotion, reflection, and preparation for one of Islam's biggest holidays, Eid al-Adha.
