Unity Day, which is on November 4, is one of the newest and the most controversial holidays in Russia.

Day off for Unity Day in Russia

Unity Day, also known as National Unity Day (День народного единства), is a public holiday in Russia observed on November 4th. It commemorates the popular uprising which led to the expulsion of Polish-Lithuanian occupation forces from Moscow in 1612, and it celebrates the end of the Time of Troubles and foreign intervention in Russia.

History

The holiday was established in 2005 by President Vladimir Putin and replaced the commemoration of the October Revolution, known as "Red October," which was observed on November 7th. Unity Day is meant to replace the Soviet-era holiday with one that has a longer historical perspective, reaching back into the Tsarist period.

Traditions

  • Religious Services: The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates a liturgy that includes a procession to honor Our Lady of Kazan, an icon credited with helping to unite Russia and expel foreign forces.
  • Public Events: Parades, concerts, and various cultural events are organized throughout the country.
  • Nationalistic Rallies: Some groups use Unity Day to promote Russian nationalism or patriotism.
  • Awards and Recognitions: The President of Russia may give out awards or recognitions on this day.

Activities

On Unity Day, people may have a day off from work and school. Many Russians spend time with family or friends, attend public events or local festivities that celebrate Russian history and culture.
