Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) is an important Jewish holiday that centers on the themes of atonement and repentance.

Yom Kippur in Serbia

Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. In Serbia, where the Jewish community is small but historically significant, Yom Kippur is observed by those of Jewish faith with traditional solemnity and reverence.

History and Traditions:

The history of Jews in Serbia dates back to Roman times, but the community grew significantly with the arrival of Sephardic Jews after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. Over the centuries, Serbian Jews have contributed to the cultural and economic life of the country, though their numbers were tragically diminished during the Holocaust.

Traditionally on Yom Kippur, which falls on the 10th day of Tishrei in the Hebrew calendar:

  • Fasting: Observant Jews in Serbia fast for approximately 25 hours from just before sunset on the eve of Yom Kippur until nightfall on the day itself. The fast is a means of focusing on prayer, repentance, and self-examination.

  • Prayer Services: Extended services are held in synagogues. In Belgrade's main synagogue or any active synagogues within Serbia, services would include Kol Nidre (prayers recited on the eve of Yom Kippur), morning prayers (Shacharit), additional prayers (Musaf), afternoon prayers (Mincha), and concluding services (Neilah).

  • No Work: As with other high holy days, work is prohibited for observant Jews during Yom Kippur.

  • Wearing White: Some individuals may choose to wear white as a symbol of purity during this holy day.

Observance:

On this day:

  • Community Gathering: The Jewish community gathers in synagogues to pray together. Given that there are only a few thousand Jews left in Serbia today, these gatherings are often intimate.

  • Private Reflection: Individuals spend time reflecting on their actions over the past year and seeking forgiveness from God and those they may have wronged.

  • Breaking Fast: After sundown at the conclusion of Yom Kippur, families and friends gather to break their fasts together with a light meal.

Despite its small size, the Jewish community in Serbia continues to uphold its traditions and observe Yom Kippur with solemnity each year as a testament to its enduring faith and heritage.
