Christmas Day in Romania

History and Traditions

Christmas Day in Romania, known as Crăciun, is celebrated on December 25th and is a public holiday that reflects the country's strong Orthodox Christian traditions. The history of Christmas in Romania is deeply intertwined with religious stories and folk customs, many of which have been preserved over the centuries.

One of the central traditions leading up to Christmas is the postul Crăciunului, or Christmas Fast, which begins on November 15th and ends on Christmas Eve. This period of fasting signifies spiritual preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ.

Another significant tradition is the singing of colinde, Romanian Christmas carols that convey spiritual messages and often tell the story of Christ's birth. Groups of children and adults alike go caroling from house to house, receiving in return sweets, fruit, traditional cakes called cozonaci, or sometimes money.

On December 24th, Christmas Eve, families gather to prepare and enjoy a festive meal. A traditional dish served at this time is sarmale (cabbage rolls filled with minced meat), often accompanied by mămăligă (polenta) and pickled vegetables.

Modern Celebrations

On Christmas Day itself, Romanians continue to celebrate with family gatherings and festive meals. In addition to religious services that many attend on this day, people exchange gifts and spend time together at home. Homes are decorated with Christmas trees adorned with ornaments and lights, while nativity scenes called iesle are also common.

Children eagerly await for Moș Crăciun (Santa Claus) to bring presents which are usually opened on Christmas Eve or on the morning of December 25th. Urban areas often host public events such as markets, concerts, and light shows throughout the holiday season.

Throughout Romania's cities and countryside villages alike, there remains a strong sense of community during Christmas with an emphasis on sharing food, joy, and goodwill—a reflection of both historical traditions and modern holiday spirit.
