Virgin of Caacupé Day is a significant religious holiday in Paraguay, celebrated annually on December 8. It honors the country's patron saint, the Virgin of Caacupé, also known as the "Blue Virgin," which is a representation of the Immaculate Conception of Mary.
The tradition dates back to the 16th century when, according to legend, a Guarani Indian named José, fleeing from a group of aggressive tribesmen, prayed to the Virgin Mary for protection. He promised to carve her image in wood if spared. Miraculously saved, he fulfilled his vow by sculpting her figure from a dark blue-colored wood. The statue became an object of veneration and eventually was housed in the Basilica of Caacupé.
